One dancer climbs onstage, wipes the floor with her hand until she is down on her elbows, shaking her ass, at which point another dancer walks up the stage and begins to wipe the floor. There will be twenty-four of them, performing the same series of twenty-five movements, over and over again. This initial canon allows the audience to travel back in time all depending on which dancer their eyes rest on at any given moment. This is Boris Charmatz’s Levée des conflits. It is in one way chaotic because of the sheer number of performers; and yet it isn’t because each is so clearly doing exactly what they should be doing. And the first dancer begins to wipe the floor again, a loop is formed, and we understand: we are locked into this sequence. There is something of Canadian experimental filmmaker Michael Snow in Levée de conflits. Like in his movie Sshtoorrty, in which the same simple short story is not only overlapped but repeated at least ten times. And yet each time the viewer notices something different since human perception is such that not everything can ever be all taken in at once; which is why when people say that, after a certain point, they “got it,” you know they didn’t get it because it’s simply impossible. We can also think of his seminal film Wavelength, a 45-minute zoom across a mostly empty loft. In terms of storytelling, Wavelength is cheekily minimalist, but the celluloid is manipulated to such a degree that on a formal level it is so excessive as (again) to make viewers feel like they have always missed something. With its changes in lighting, no matter how seemingly few, the same could be said of Levée des conflits. And the variations occur. They perform the sequence while going in a circle in a space that progressively gets smaller. Time seems similarly condensed. Then they slow the movements down as they get even closer to each other. One could also be reminded of Michael Trent’s conceptual show It’s about time: 60 dances in 60 minutes, in which dancers repeated the same sequence of fifteen actions four times, each action first taking a minute, then fifteen seconds, then three minutes, then a minute again. Levée des conflits might be less playful than It’s about time, but more ambitious in scope. Then some of the dancers can be seen performing the sequence backwards, until they are all wiping the floor. And the cycle begins anew, abandoning the canon in favor of synchronicity. The choreography’s simplicity gets exposed, and yet it’s also more pleasurable. What is it about synchronicity? Is it because deep down we’re all order-loving fascists? Is it because it gives us something the universe doesn’t? The illusion of control, no matter how trivial? We exit Levée des conflits the same way we entered it, like the characters in Luis Buñuel’s The Exterminating Angel. It will have taken an hour and forty minutes to complete the cycle, but it will be with a feeling of resolution so logical that it might induce chills. I usually try to avoid saying such platitudes, but hopefully the advantage is that when I do say them you know I mean it: Levée des conflits is the best dance show that’s been presented in Montreal this past year. Here it is, the last dance show of the year. As customary, it is provided by the third-year students of L’École de Danse Contemporaine de Montréal and involves three pieces. The first two come courtesy of Montréal Danse and the last, an original creation for ÉDCM, is by visiting French choreographer Julien Desplantez. Trois peaux, by Jean-Sébastien Lourdais The human body transformed until it is no longer human, transformed until it is animal, but no particular animal: humanimal. Fists instead of hands, hunched over, head hanging low, on all fours. Mouvement half fluid/half stops, the organic interrupted by the robotic. (The music, which could be described as electrogrunts, reflects this aspect.) Sometimes, in passing, the dancers appear to be flexing, with their awkward arm positions. The body shakes, organic, too organic, uncontrollable. The movement is other, less articulated than that of human beings, but it says plenty of other things, things that cannot be understood and that are therefore unsettling. Why? Are the third-year students at ÉDCM not all adults? Is it because the show is mostly performed in front of their family and friends? And, most importantly, who cares? Il y avait ce fou…, by Julien Desplantez Thank God, the fashion-trash music that opens the piece soon subsides to offer us what school dance shows do best, i.e. the superficial pleasures of excess: a dozen dancers onstage from beginning to end, so much action that the eye cannot take it all in, synchronicity. Did Desplantez steal his small stationary steps from Hofesh Shechter’s Political Mother? If so, good for him. Even though his choreography is not particularly innovative, it’s still less lazy and juvenile than Shechter’s. De la danse-bonbon. On peut souvent se fier à leurs réactions pour savoir si quelque chose d’intéressant se passe. Si elles se regardent constamment pour savoir comment elles devraient réagir (car on sait que, lorsqu’on est adolescent, les réactions individuelles sont interdites), c’est bon signe. C’est bien l’art qui laisse perplexe, face auquel même notre réaction ne peut être simpliste. C’est ce qui s’est passé lors de la représentation de (M)IMOSA: Twenty Looks or Paris Is Burning at the Judson Church (M) en cette deuxième journée du Festival TransAmériques. Ce n’est peut-être pas surprenant étant donné que, comme le sous-titre l’indique, le chorégraphe new-yorkais Trajal Harrell croise la culture queer avec la vision démocratique du mouvement des chorégraphes postmodernes. Et il n’est pas le seul chorégraphe-interprète. Il y en a trois de plus, rassemblant aussi Paris et Lisbonne : Cecilia Bengolea, François Chaignaud et Marlene Monteiro Freitas. On pourrait avoir peur que ce soit chaotique, et ce l’est, mais non pas à cause du nombre de chorégraphes, mais bien dû à l’esthétique postmoderne. Ironiquement, c’est aussi celle-ci qui permet au spectacle de faire preuve de cohésion. Le courant postmoderne a donné de la fraicheur à la danse. (« Ça respire, » j’ai écrit dans mes notes.) Il y a quelque chose de libérateur lorsque les gens cessent de se soucier du beau, du sexy. Ça fait du bien être laid ou ridicule de temps en temps. On retrouve dans (M)IMOSA le mouvement au quotidien, comme si les interprètes ne faisaient que danser dans leur chambre à coucher en chantant leur chanson du moment, sans trop se forcer, et que nous avions la chance de les espionner. D’un autre côté, il y a la performance « all eyes on me » des voguers et drag queens et kings. On peut d’abord se rappeler Spoken Word/Body de Martin Bélanger, et ensuite Pow Wow de Dany Desjardins, mais (M)IMOSA réussit mieux la transition au théâtre. Peut-être que la relation avec le public en est la raison. Les lumières continuent d’éclairer les spectateurs durant la pièce, comme pour nous faire sentir qu’on fait partie intégrale du spectacle. On fait fi de la religiosité conventionnelle de la performance théâtrale, et c’est ce qui finit par théâtraliser le tout. Les interprètes se promènent parmi le public et cherchent leurs accessoires dans les rangées sans se soucier du bruit qu’ils font. Il y a aussi quelque chose de rafraichissant à voir des interprètes de talent refuser la virtuosité, en faire moins qu’ils en sont clairement capables. Le talent se laisse alors deviner ici et là, et il n’en ait que plus réjouissant. En tout cas, leur confusion initiale passée, les adolescentes ont eu l’air de vraiment tripper. A koto player, a singer, a dancer. East meets West. Music meets dance. Voice meets bodies. At the back of the stage, a single passage of light. The dancer travels through the light; the light travels through the dancer. The voice: a woman from another time, from another planet. A woman from another world. The otherworldliness of her appearance: crimson red hair, a futuristic high-collared burgundy dress made from a quilted material akin to that of a bed cover, blue eye shadow popping out. The otherworldliness of her voice: sometimes manipulated digitally, echoed, reverberated, amplified. Static noise for applause. The koto player: comically intense, as she violently shakes her head from side to side while playing her instrument. Hard to resist Songs’ charm, at first. Unfortunately, it loses much of its magic as it progresses. It would help if the entrances and exits were better dissimulated, by shifting our attention from performer to performer and by dimming the lights. The latter technique is better carried out in the second half of the show. And what of the dancer? Let’s speak of the dance itself: anaemic. One could say that that’s okay given that Songs is more a concert than a dance show, but the truth is that even the musical element suffers from the same problem. Not the music itself, nor the talent of the three performers, which remains undeniable. However, none of them are used to their full capacity. Director Stéphane Guignard claims to be inspired by John Cage, but even after reading all the material in the press package, how exactly that is remains obscure. With the American artist’s philosophy, using him as an inspiration is not unlike using life itself. As all the elements are only partially made use of, questions begin to emerge. What justifies the form of the show? What is its guiding principle? What is at its core? These questions remain unanswered. The show ends with the nine tubes of coloured light at the back of the stage. As their colours change, they begin to flash on and off alternately, one light going off each time until we are down to none. The effect is hypnotic. It is the most compelling part of the show. A solution emerges: cut all the performers, turn Songs into a light show.
